Loneliness
An induvidual's emotional and cognitive reaction to having fewer and less satisfying relationship than he or she desires (Archibald, Bartholomew & Marx,1995)
In contrast, those people who simply do not want friend do not experience loneliness
The consequences of being lonely:
-Depression
-Anxiety
-Unhappy
-Dissatisfaction
-Self blame
-Shyness
(lead to physical illness)
Why are some people lonely?
-Genetic Determinant
-Mother Child Interactions
-Social Learning Experience
Reducing Loneliness
- Cognitive Therapy
(To disrupt the pattern of negativity and to encourage new thought, perception, and expectation about social interaction)
-Social Skill Training
(the lonely person is provided with example of socially appropriate behavior on videotape and then given the opportinuty to copy the observed behavior in role play)
